In a historic appointment, Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson has been named the new principal flutist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, one of the most prestigious positions in the flute world. Selected through a rigorous audition process, he now joins the ranks of the legendary musicians who have shaped the orchestra’s iconic sound.
Founded in 1882, the Berliner Philharmoniker is one of the most revered orchestras in the world, known for its artistic innovation and unmistakable sound. Over the years, it has been led by some of the greatest conductors in history, including Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Simon Rattle, and currently, Kirill Petrenko.

The orchestra has also been home to many distinguished flutists, such as Emmanuel Pahud, Andreas Blau, Karlheinz Zöller, and Aurèle Nicolet, making the principal flute chair one of the most coveted positions in classical music. Höskuldsson’s appointment follows in this great tradition, marking a significant new chapter in the orchestra’s history.

Born in Iceland, Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson has built an exceptional career as both an orchestral flutist and a soloist. Before joining the Berliner Philharmoniker, he served as principal flutist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (2015–2024), where he performed under esteemed conductors such as Riccardo Muti. Prior to that, he held the same position in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York (2008–2016), playing in some of the most celebrated operatic productions of our time.
Höskuldsson’s early musical training began at the Reykjavík School of Music, studying with Bernhard Wilkinson. He later moved to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he trained with Peter Lloyd, a flutist renowned for his tenure with the London Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to his orchestral career, Höskuldsson is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing extensively across the United States, Europe, and Japan. He is also a dedicated pedagogue, currently teaching at DePaul University School of Music and the Pacific Music Festival, and offering masterclasses around the world.
Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson has been playing an Emanuel flute since 2009. Known for its exceptional craftsmanship, his instrument allows him to explore a wide range of tonal colors and dynamic nuances while maintaining a consistently exceptional-quality sound.
