The Man Behind the Legacy
James Pappoutsakis (1921–1978) was more than a virtuoso flutist; he was a mentor, a visionary, and a passionate advocate for music education. As principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for 38 years, Pappoutsakis left an indelible mark on the world of classical music. His commitment to nurturing young talent led to the establishment of this prestigious competition in his honor.
The Competition Journey
Final Round: Selected finalists have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and distinguished panel of judges. The final round takes place in January or February at one of the participating schools. Each competitor presents a diverse repertoire, showcasing their versatility and artistry.
Application and Preliminary Round: Flutists from around the globe submit their applications by November 1st, 2024. The preliminary round involves a screened audition (in camera), where judges evaluate technical proficiency, tone quality, and musicality. The anticipation builds as the selection process unfolds.
Repertoire: The final round repertoire varies each year, challenging participants to interpret both classical and contemporary works. From Bach to Poulenc, flutists demonstrate their mastery of different styles and eras.
Prizes and Recognition: The First Prize Winner receives not only a significant cash award but also gifts from local and national music and flute-related organizations. Since 2006, the second prize has been named in honor of William H. Grass, the founding president of the competition.
