The Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia (FSGP) has announced its 2026 Young Artist Competition, an exciting opportunity for flutists between 18 and 30 years old as of February 28, 2026. This annual event highlights exceptional young talent and culminates in a live final round and Winners’ Recital during the FSGP Flute Fair on February 28, 2026.
Competition Timeline
- Entry Form & Preliminary Recordings Due: December 28, 2025 (11:59 PM EST)
- Finalist Notification: On or before January 25, 2026
- Final Round: February 27, 2026 – Wells School of Music, West Chester University of Pennsylvania
- Winners’ Recital: February 28, 2026 – During the Flute Fair
Prizes
- First Prize: $1,000
- Second Prize: $600
- Third Prize: $400
Up to six finalists will be selected to perform live in the final round, with winners announced immediately following adjudication.
Eligibility Highlights
- Open to flutists aged 18–30 (as of February 28, 2026).
- FSGP Basic Adult Membership is required to enter.
- Previous first prize winners are not eligible to compete again.
Repertoire Overview
Preliminary Round (audio recordings):
- Choice of solo flute work:
- C.P.E. Bach – Sonata in A Minor for Solo Flute (entire piece, no repeats)
- OR J.S. Bach – Partita in A Minor for Solo Flute (entire piece, no repeats)
- Plus one contemporary solo flute work:
- L. Al-Ahmad – Two Skazkas (I & II)
- OR V. Coleman – Danza de la Mariposa
Final Round (in-person):
- One of the solo pieces from the preliminary round (selected by judges).
- One flute and piano work:
- Daniel Dorff – Sonata (Three Lakes)
- Lowell Liebermann – Sonata, Op. 23
- Samuel Zyman – Sonata No. 1
Key Details
- Entry fee: $55 (membership fee not included).
- Finalists will receive information about local accompanists, travel, and accommodations.
- Winners’ names and bios will be published on the FSGP website and social media (March 1, 2026).
