FLAUTANDO Boswil has long been known as one of Europe’s most beloved flute gatherings, taking place at the historic Künstlerhaus Boswil in Switzerland — often called the “home of the flute.” The 2026 edition, titled The Magic of the Flute, marks the twenty-sixth time that this unique event brings together flutists, teachers, and enthusiasts from around the world.
With a rich program of workshops, exhibitions, and a master concert featuring renowned international artists, FLAUTANDO Boswil continues to celebrate the instrument’s endless versatility and beauty.
Editorial
Dear flute aficionados,
I warmly invite you to Boswil for FLAUTANDO, the twenty-sixth celebration of the flute at the “home of the flute.”
Why “home of the flute”?
Boswil became world-famous thanks to Marcel Moyse’s legendary masterclasses. In the 1960s and 1970s, this was the place where flute enthusiasts from around the world gathered to learn from Moyse. Looking back, the list of participants reads like a who’s who of the flute world: Sir James Galway, Peter-Lukas Graf, Michel Debost, Trevor Wye, Aurèle Nicolet, Robert Aitken, and many others.
The title of this year’s event says it all: the fascination—and indeed the magic of the flute—remains unbroken.
The magic continues
When things turn romantic in films, which instrument is heard? When a hip-hop track wants to sound especially cool, which instrument takes the solo? And when an orchestra needs a passage of special expressiveness, who plays the solo?
In recent years, the rise of low and very low flutes has expanded the sound world even further. Flute ensembles and orchestras, equipped with instruments of every size, are now captivating audiences worldwide.
The Künstlerhaus Boswil, with its European reputation, concert church, and idyllic setting away from traffic and noise, offers the perfect environment for a day dedicated to our beloved transverse flute. Its award-winning concerts, programs for young talent, and inspiring master events have made it one of the most respected venues in Switzerland.
This year, we welcome distinguished specialists representing a wide range of flute traditions and approaches:
- Gudrun Hinze (piccolo) – Solar and lunar breathing types
- Philipp Jundt (concert flute) – Articulation styles in the 18th century
- Tilmann Dehnhard – Flute beatboxing and Sound painting
- Gareth McLearnon – Demystifying tone and Motivation – not your friend?
- Stefan Keller & Gareth McLearnon – Deep flutes in everyday life
Alongside the workshops, visitors can enjoy the high-calibre flute exhibition in the beautiful foyer—an ideal meeting point for exchanging ideas over tea or coffee.
The day concludes with the Surprise – Surround – Master Concert, featuring Simone Keller at the piano. The program, with works by Reinecke, Clarke, Bach, Dorff, Dehnhard, McLearnon, and Desmond, spans diverse styles and highlights the flute’s remarkable versatility—indeed, its magic in countless facets.
I look forward to welcoming you in Boswil.
Stefan Keller – Project Manager, FLAUTANDO Boswil & Flute Aficionado
Workshop Topics
- Gudrun Hinze – Lunar and Solar Breathing Types
“Solar and lunar breathing types are polar dispositions that people are born with, just as one is left- or right-handed… This predisposition shapes whether one draws strength primarily from inhalation or exhalation.” - Tilmann Dehnhard – Sound Painting
A musical sign language for improvisation and real-time composition, developed by Walter Thompson in New York in 1974. With over a thousand signs now used by musicians, dancers, actors, and artists, it requires no prior experience—only openness to creative exploration. - Gareth McLearnon – Demystifying Good Flute Sound
A “Flutes Out” workshop on tone, breathing, posture, vibrato, and debunking common myths. - Gareth McLearnon – Motivation: Not Your Friend?
A session on the role of practice, habit formation, and effective planning for success in flute playing and beyond. - Philipp Jundt – Articulation Styles in the 18th Century
Exploring the diverse approaches to articulation as described by Quantz, C.P.E. Bach, Devienne, Leopold Mozart, and Tromlitz, applied directly to musical passages. - Stefan Keller & Gareth McLearnon – Go Low: Low Flutes in Everyday Life
Practical demonstrations of how low flutes enrich lessons, ensembles, and performances with their playful and expansive sound. - Tilmann Dehnhard – Flute Beatboxing
