In January 2026, the Galway Flute Academy invites adult flutists from around the world to a special two-part online series dedicated to one of the most meaningful and transformative aspects of musicianship: becoming a soloist in one’s own playing.
Led by Lady Jeanne Galway, these sessions take place on Thursday, January 22 and Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 7:00 pm CET, and are open to adult learners of all levels. Whether you are returning to the flute after years away, developing confidence as an amateur performer, or seeking deeper artistic clarity, this series is designed to meet you exactly where you are.
We Are All Soloists
At the heart of this series lies a powerful idea:
every flutist is a soloist.
We are not merely players of notes, but interpreters of musical thought. Each phrase we shape, each breath we take, each silence we honor reflects our personal relationship with the music. As Lady Jeanne Galway reminds participants, we all carry within us the responsibility—and the privilege—of giving voice to the composers who entrusted us with their music.
The January sessions explore how to step fully into this role:
with purpose, direction, confidence, and clarity.
From Technique to Musical Intention
Many adult learners are familiar with the technical building blocks of flute playing:
knowing fingerings, adjusting the embouchure, practicing scales, refining articulation, sustaining long phrases through controlled breathing.
But what happens when you are alone with the music?
What changes when you play a cadenza, a solo passage in an orchestral or ensemble setting, or a piece entirely on your own? How do technique, imagination, and inner hearing come together in those moments?
These sessions move beyond mechanics to address the deeper questions of solo playing:
- how to hear ahead and trust your musical instincts
- how clarity of intention leads directly to confidence
- how understanding transforms fear into expressive freedom
Repertoire as a Gateway to Confidence
Using a selection of beloved flute works, the sessions will explore how musical awareness informs interpretation. From the architectural clarity of Johann Sebastian Bach to the expressive solitude of Syrinx by Claude Debussy, participants will examine how phrasing, breath, articulation, and imagination shape a convincing solo voice.
These are not abstract discussions, but practical, experience-based explorations meant to offer ideas you can apply immediately, both on stage and in private practice.
A Supportive, Global Learning Environment
The Adult Learners Series is conducted online, with:
- live instruction
- Q&A interaction
- performance and lesson-based demonstrations
- full session recordings available afterward
This format allows participants from different countries and time zones to engage deeply while learning in a supportive, non-judgmental atmosphere.
As Lady Jeanne Galway emphasizes, it is never too late to begin again—and growth begins the moment understanding takes root.
