On March 5, 2026, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra presents an important program at Eldborg Hall, Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík. Under the direction of Tomáš Hanus, Icelandic flutist Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson performs Lowell Liebermann’s Flute Concerto No. 2, a work written especially for him.
The concerto was premiered by Höskuldsson in March 2024 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While elegant and accessible in musical language, the solo part places significant technical and expressive demands on the performer.
The concert carries additional significance as Höskuldsson is Principal Flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. His return to Iceland as soloist marks a notable moment in his artistic trajectory.
The program opens with Adagio for flute, piano, harp and strings by Jón Nordal, presented in connection with the centenary of the composer’s birth. The second half features two Czech works conducted by Hanus: Antonín Dvořák’s Suite in A major (“American Suite”) and Bohuslav Martinů’s Symphony No. 6, which will receive its first concert performance in Iceland.
With this performance, Liebermann’s Second Flute Concerto continues its journey beyond its 2024 American premiere. Returning to Iceland with the work adds another dimension to its history, as it is presented in a new musical setting and before a home audience. The Reykjavík concert represents another step in the work’s performance history.
