Every flutist has studied with at least three of these…
sometimes in the same lesson.
1. The Tone Obsessive
Focus:
One note. Always one note.
Description:
You thought you came to play music.
You played one long tone for 20 minutes.
Catchphrase:
“Again.”
2. The Breathing Philosopher
Focus:
Breathing is everything.
Description:
Lessons feel like yoga sessions.
At some point, you forget if you’re playing flute or discovering inner peace.
Catchphrase:
“Don’t take a breath… allow it.”
3. The Technique Machine
Focus:
Scales. Articulation. Precision.
Description:
Everything is fixable — with the right exercise.
And you will do all of them.
Catchphrase:
“Taffanel & Gaubert, No. 4.”
4. The Storyteller
Focus:
Music = narrative
Description:
Every phrase has a character, a reason, a past, and emotional trauma.
Catchphrase:
“What are you trying to say?”
5. The Perfectionist
Focus:
Nothing is ever quite right.
Description:
You improve constantly… but somehow never enough.
Catchphrase:
“Again. Better.”
6. The Encourager
Focus:
Confidence first
Description:
Everything you play sounds “beautiful.”
You leave every lesson feeling like a soloist.
Catchphrase:
“That was lovely!”
7. The Silent Listener
Focus:
Minimal talking
Description:
They listen. A lot.
Then say one sentence that changes everything.
Catchphrase:
“Try again.”
8. The Demonstrator
Focus:
“I’ll show you.”
Description:
They play your piece… better than you… effortlessly.
Catchphrase:
“Like this.”
9. The Life Coach
Focus:
Everything (not just flute)
Description:
You came for a lesson.
You left with advice about discipline, mindset, and life.
Catchphrase:
“This is not about the flute.”
10. The Mystery Teacher
Focus:
Unknown
Description:
You’re not entirely sure what just happened…
but somehow, you improved.
Catchphrase:
“Interesting.”
Most flutists don’t study with just one type —
they experience all of them… sometimes in the same lesson.
And somehow… they were all right.
