This autumn, Luxembourg will host a spectacular celebration of two of the most famous flutist-composers of the 19th century: the brothers Franz and Carl Doppler. Entitled “Doppleriade,” the event will take place on October 18–19, 2025, featuring exceptional concerts, lectures, and performances dedicated to the remarkable legacy of the Doppler family.
The Doppler Brothers: Virtuoso Flutists and Composers
Franz (1821–1883) and Carl Doppler (1825–1900) were Hungarian-Austrian flutists and composers whose works became staples of the Romantic flute repertoire. Known for their dazzling virtuosity, the brothers gained fame across Europe with their flute duets and orchestral compositions.
Franz Doppler was the first flutist of the Budapest Opera Orchestra at just 18 years old, later becoming the principal flutist at the Vienna Opera and a professor at the Vienna Conservatory from 1864 to 1867. Both brothers left behind an impressive catalog of operatic works, concert pieces, and, above all, flute music that continues to inspire performers to this day.
A Stellar Line-Up
The Doppleriade brings together outstanding artists and ensembles to honor their legacy:
- Grand Ensemble de flûtes du CVL (composed of teachers and alumni of the Luxembourg Conservatoire)
- Sidney Scho – conductor
- András Adorján – flute
- Carlo Jans – flute
- Dina Nimax – harp
