The 6th International Theobald Böhm Competition for Flute and Alto Flute

The 6th International Theobald Böhm Competition for Flute and Alto Flute will take place from Monday, March 10, to Friday, March 14, 2025, at the Schloss Nymphenburg, Johannissaal, in Munich, Germany.

This prestigious competition, organized by the Theobald Böhm Society and Theobald Böhm Donation, commemorates the legacy of Theobald Böhm, renowned flutist, composer, and inventor of the Böhm flute.

Prizes

1st Prize: €5,000

2nd Prize: €3,000

3rd Prize: €2,000
(If there are two winners for 1st or 2nd prize, each receives €4,000 or €2,500, respectively.)

Special Prize: Best alto flute performance

Special Prize: Best participant under 20 years

Competition Venue and Transport

Location: Schloss Nymphenburg, Johannissaal

Public Transport: Bus 51 from S-Bahn station Laim (5 min) or Tram 17 from Central Station (22 min)

Eligibility and Application

Age Limit: Up to 32 years old

Documents Required: Biography with contact details, recent photograph, copy of ID, program selection, and proof of registration fee payment (€100)

Repertoire: Select 3 pieces, approximately 15 minutes total

Theobald Böhm: Études, Op. 37, No. 15 or No. 22

Mozart/Böhm: Andante, KV 315 or Larghetto from Clarinet Quintet, KV 581 (alto flute)

Telemann: One Fantasia (flute solo)

2nd Round (March 13, 2025)

Repertoire (Flute in C): Select 3 pieces, approximately 25 minutes

Theobald Böhm: Fantaisie concertante, Op. 14

Hindemith, Martinů, or Prokofiev: Sonata (1st movement)

Bozza: Image or Karg-Elert: Sonata appassionata, Op. 140

Repertoire (Alto Flute):

Gluck/Böhm: Euridice, arrangement [37]

3rd Round (March 14, 2025)

Repertoire: Select 2 pieces, approximately 20 minutes

Theobald Böhm: Larghetto, Op. 35 or Élégie (arranged by Böhm)

Theobald Böhm: Divertissement, Op. 13 or Variations sur un air tyrolien, Op. 20

Concert of the Winners

Date: March 14, 2025, at 6:00 PM

Venue: Schloss Nymphenburg, Johannissaal

Aims and Mission

The competition honors Theobald Böhm (1794-1881), a pivotal figure in flute history, by promoting his works, his innovation of the alto flute in G, and the original Böhm flute system. It aims to highlight the best interpreters of Böhm’s works and foster appreciation for his contributions to flute repertoire.
