In a revelation that few expected, President Donald Trump shared during a recent podcast interview that he once took flute lessons as a child - a detail he says has never come up before.
“I had flute lessons! This is the first person who’s ever asked me that question,” Trump said during the Pod Force One podcast, speaking with journalist Miranda Devine. “Can you believe it? I could’ve been a flutist.”
Trump said his parents had him take aptitude tests when he was around 11 or 12 years old. The results reportedly showed strong musical ability. “They told my father, ‘Your son is brilliant at music, he’d be an incredible musician.’ That wasn’t what he wanted to hear,” Trump said. “But I do have an ear for music.”
Although Trump ultimately didn’t pursue the flute - “I didn’t particularly like it, it wasn’t for me,” he admitted - he emphasized that music remains an important part of his life.
Singer Lee Greenwood, a longtime friend of the president and known for God Bless the U.S.A., spoke about Trump’s musical side earlier this year. “He’s very creative and very artistic. I don’t doubt that he has a great ear for music,” Greenwood said at a March event at the Kennedy Center.
The revelation surprised many, as President Trump has rarely discussed any background in classical music. While his campaign rallies are known for their energetic soundtracks, including YMCA and Elvis Presley’s An American Trilogy, this is the first time he has spoken publicly about studying the flute as a child.
The comment sparked curiosity among both musicians and political observers, offering an unexpected glimpse into the early life of the sitting president.
