The Sant’Umile Sanctuary in Bisignano, Italy, transformed into a vibrant international stage from April 25–27, 2025, for the second edition of the Franz Doppler International Flute Competition. Organized by the Associazione Flautisti Calabresi under the artistic direction of Maestro Francesco Guido, and in collaboration with the Municipality of Bisignano, the event drew outstanding talent and an enthusiastic audience from around the world.
Over the course of three days, sixty young flutists from Italy, Iceland, France, Venezuela, Switzerland, Turkey, and many other countries competed across five categories (A–E), showcasing exceptional artistry and musical excellence. With an esteemed jury, a supportive audience, and a stunning location immersed in nature, the competition has already established itself as one of the most significant international flute events after just two editions.

“This competition was created to give young flutists from Calabria the opportunity to engage with the international music community,” said Maestro Francesco Guido. “In an era where many feel the need to leave, we are witnessing the opposite: the world is coming to Calabria, recognizing its cultural and musical value. My heartfelt thanks go to our supporters, the Franciscan Friars – especially Father Guardian Frate Nilo – whose warm hospitality made these days of music and exchange even more special. The Sanctuary offered an ideal setting, and Sant’Umile continues to be our guiding light.”

The international jury, chaired by Maestro Claudio Montafia and including Maestri Raquele Magalhães, Nicola Campitelli, Lello Narcisi, and Marco Crisafulli, praised the high standard of the participants. “These flutists truly challenged us,” commented Montafia. “To young musicians, I recommend slow, mindful practice, intentional musical choices, and a strong focus on expressiveness.”
Essential to the competition’s success were collaborative pianists Alessandra Felice and Francesco Silvestri, who supported all participants with remarkable professionalism.
The gala evening, which marked the conclusion of the competition, was a highlight—combining music, emotion, and international exchange. The ceremony was met with enthusiastic applause, especially for the Absolute First Prize winners:
- Maria Michela Iacovone (Category A)
- Alessandro Bennardo (Category C)
- Miriam D’Amico (Category D)
- Miriam D’Amico & Francesco Saverio Bruni (Category E – Chamber Music)

This year’s edition introduced two special awards. The Silver Headjoint, donated by Borsari Strumenti Musicali (Bologna), was awarded to Francesco Saverio Bruni. The Roberto Fabiano Prize, honoring the memory of the renowned Calabrian flutist and pedagogue who passed away in 2021, was awarded to Alessandro Bennardo for his distinguished performance in Category C. The prize was established by Maestro Guido with the support of Dr. Antonella Antonioli, wife of the late maestro.
Local authorities, including Mayor Francesco Fucile and Cultural Affairs Assessor Stefania De Marco, expressed pride in the initiative and emphasized its importance for enhancing the cultural and historical richness of Bisignano. “The Sanctuary of Sant’Umile is a place of deep spirituality and beauty. I thank the artistic director for choosing it as the setting for such a prestigious event,” stated Mayor Fucile.

The Franz Doppler Competition concluded on a note of excellence, and eyes are already set on the upcoming Flute Festival 2026, where some of the winners will perform again. Calabria continues to affirm itself as a land of music and promise.
