Marten Root
Marten Root, a prominent flutist and researcher, specializes in historical flutes and the performance practices of 18th and 19th-century music.
His notable achievements include founding the Biedermeier Wind Quintet and the Ensemble Schönbrunn. With these ensembles, he has traveled the world, recording an extensive repertoire that includes sonatas by Bach, Kuhlau, and Mozart’s flute concerti. Root has held the first flute position in the Barokorkest van de Nederlandse Bachvereniging for over 30 years. Additionally, since 1992, he has occupied the same role in Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique.
His recorded performances span a wide range—from Bach to Berlioz, Schumann, Brahms, Verdi, and Debussy. Root also teaches historical flutes at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and serves as a professor for historical flutes at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, Germany.
His masterclasses have reached students across Europe, the USA, Canada, Israel, and various far-eastern countries.
