The countdown has begun for the highly anticipated 6th International Theobald Böhm Competition for Flute and Alto Flute, set to take place from March 10-14, 2025, in the stunning Schloss Nymphenburg, Johannissaal, Munich.

With its prestigious reputation, this competition continues to draw some of the most talented flutists from around the world, celebrating the legacy of Theobald Böhm – renowned flutist, composer, and inventor of the modern flute.
Impressive Global Participation
This year, an astounding 75 flutists from 20 countries have registered, reinforcing the competition’s status as a truly international event. The geographical diversity is striking:
- Europe: 47 participants, including 14 from Germany, 5 each from Hungary and Italy, and representatives from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Latvia, Luxembourg, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey.
- Asia: 27 participants, with strong representation from South Korea (12), China (9), Japan (5), and Taiwan (2).
- America: 1 participant from Brazil
Of the 75 competitors, 52 are female and 23 are male, showcasing the strong presence of women in flute performance today.
Spotlight on Alto Flute and Young Talents
A special highlight of the competition is the alto flute category, which continues to gain prominence. 11 flutists will showcase their alto flute artistry in two rounds. These talented musicians, including Hannah Bernitt, Annika Boras, Vojtěk Čermak, Johanna Dabels, Luca Fiorattini, Kathrin Haberkern, Anne Koch, Anamarija Lajh, Jeongeon Lee, Jona Mehlitz, and Marcos Villalobos Ortiz will compete for a special prize: a silver piccolo head-joint from Mancke valued at 2,560 EUR.
Additionally, 9 young prodigies under the age of 20, including Eszter Bessenyői, Mısra Coşkun, Greta Mandler, Chayeun Kim, Marcin Kosiorowski, Yunhoo Lee, Eszter Szegedi, Adéla Vrátilová, and Rongzhen Wen will bring fresh energy to the competition. Their talent and dedication will be rewarded with a special prize: a wooden piccolo head-joint from Mancke worth 1,170 EUR.

Prestigious Jury and Prize Distribution
An esteemed panel of judges, including Martin Belič (President), Aldo Baerten, Sung-hyun Cho, Matvey Demin, Anton Kushnir, Iva Lubomirova, and Ruth Wentorf, will oversee the competition. The winners will receive generous cash prizes:
- 1st Prize: 5,000 EUR (or 4,000 EUR each if shared)
- 2nd Prize: 3,000 EUR (or 2,500 EUR each if shared)
- 3rd Prize: 2,000 EUR
- Additional special prizes for alto flute and young performers.
Festive Concert Ahead of the Competition
To set the stage for this thrilling week, a Festkonzert will take place on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Schloss Nymphenburg, Johannissaal.** This concert will feature works dedicated to Theobald Böhm, performed by renowned flutists including Aldo Baerten, Martin Belič, Sung-hyun Cho, Matvey Demin, Anton Kushnir, Iva Lubomirova, Ruth Wentorf, Nino Gurevich, and Madoka Ueno.
The program includes virtuosic and expressive pieces by Giulio Briccialdi, Anton Bernhard Fürstenau, Johann Valentin Hamm, Karl Keller, Emanuele Krakamp, Anton Ortner, Wilhelm Popp, and Giuseppe Rabboni, celebrating Böhm’s influence on flute music.
